Word of caution to anyone racing a vehicle with an active air bag restraint system.
I read that the SCCA warned that wearing a full face helment in a vehicle with an active air bag restraint system could possibly result in a broken jaw due to the angle of the air bag deploying up and under the chin of the full face helment.
But, I also read that Joe Marko of HMS Motorsports did a presentation on track safety. He mentioned there has been some helmet/air bag deployment testing done at Delphi. The tests showed there is no difference between an open face helmet and a full face helmet with its visor closed/locked or removed when an air bag deploys. The air bag doesn't get caught under the chin of the full face helmet. However, if you have the visor partially open instead of fully down and locked into place the air bag will catch the visor and throw your helmet backwards. Sun shields/visors over the eye port on open face and full face helmets will do the same thing so they need to be removed.

all i know is that all shell 2000 rated helmet will be no good in 2013 as they only have a 12 year life span.so don't buy a 2000 or 2005 helmet.the 2010 are good to 2022.

Just wondering were this 12 year information comes from Kelly. I've surfed around a bit but couldn't find anything with 12 years attached to it. The Snell foundation does recommend helmet replacement after 5 years or an impact but I'm curious about the 12 year deal. First I've heard off that. Just sayin' . . .

Wondering the same thing, actually with NHRA it was always 10 year which would make a Snell 2000 helmet non-compliant unless things have changed. If you're buying a new helmet now and its Snell 2005 or 2000 I hope its a good deal cause its been sitting around for a long time.

People have to realize IHRA and NHRA have different requirements. Here is a link to some info on NHRA requirements... www.etownraceway.com/drag_racing_safety_and_helmets_rules.aspxAnd here are the amendments for the 2012 NHRA rulebook which includes a section on helmets. missionraceway.com/navigation/rulebook_2012.pdfPage 4 states the following: SPECIAL NOTE ON SNELL SERIES 2000 HELMETS (DESIGNATION SA2000 AND M2000): The Snell 2000 series helmets expired January 1, 2012 and are no longer permitted for use. This is stated for reference in the chart: NHRA Helmet Expiration Dates found on page 41 of Section 20 (General Regulations) of the 2012 NHRA Rulebook. Multiple places throughout the 2012 NHRA Rulebook the Snell SA2000 and Snell M2000 helmets are referenced. These references will be removed from the online rulebook when it is updated in the Spring of 2012. Again, as documented on page 41 of Section 20: General Regulations the Snell SA2000 and M2000 have expired and are prohibited from use.Now before anyone jumps all over me, I realize we follow IHRA rules, but for anyone travelling across the border to an NHRA track this is good information.
