STOCK/SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE RACE #3;
Presented By Moncton Chrysler Superstore, Moncton, NB
RACE REPORT
Another race weekend and yet another rainy Saturday......Mother Nature sure has a nasty sense of humour this year it seems. The only thing running down the track all day Saturday was water. Sunday though was sunny and clear, and by the end of the day yet another successful race of the ACSSA Stock/Super Stock Challenge series was in the books.
Eighteen cars made the call this time around; including Keith Johnston and his 1980 Malibu wagon (battling some new car issues), Tommy Coughlan with his crate motor Mustang, and Rick Wilson with his Super Stock Camaro. These three racers were participating in their first ACSSA event ever, while Scott Underhill, Bill Campbell, and Bill Sheppard were at their first ACSSA race of the season. Here's hoping that they all attend Race 4 as well, along with the other racers that couldn't make it to MDP.
The first Qualifying Round was completed by 10:45 AM, and established the initial ladder as follows:

At 12:30PM we ran our 2nd Qualifying session. Unfortunately the tower was unable to produce a print out of the 2nd session, a problem which could not be resolved for the rest of the race.
The 2nd Qualifying session saw only a couple of improved runs and resulted in only minor shuffling of the order. Scott Underhill moved up a spot to 8th and bumped Jeremy Keans to 9th, and Rick Wilson improved with a -0.390 run which put him in the 13th spot and moved both Wayne Deveau and Don LaVoie down one spot. With a set field, we headed into the 1st Round at about 2:00PM. As a result of the printout problem we do not have any timing data available to share with you.
ROUND 1:
Chris Howes B/SA defeated Bill Sheppard H/SA
Blair MacDonald GT/GA defeated Rick Wilson SS/HA
Scott Underhill E/SA defeated Alan Harper SS/KA
Tommy Coughlan C/CM defeated Jack Keirstead J/SA
Malcolm London L/SA defeated Don LaVoie B/FIA
Dave Garland SS/IA defeated Kelly MacKay G/SA
Trevor Ervin C/SA defeated Bill Campbell E/SA
Greg Nickerson B/FIA defeated Wayne Deveau GT/CA
Jeremy Keans G/SA defeated Keith Johnston S/GTE
The new "Bounty Hunter" bonus was introduced at our previous race. Sponsored by LaFarge Concrete, it offered $50 to anyone who defeats the most recent race winner, in that case Race 1 winner Greg Nickerson. That time Greg had the last laugh when he won Race 2 and pocketed the extra $50 himself. For Race 3 the ACSSA Directors decided to up the ante to $100, as with two wins in a row it was felt that Greg deserved a bigger bullseye on his back. Greg was able to fend off the first Bounty Hunter of the day with his defeat of Wayne Deveau and his wheelstanding Starfire. Four more rounds to go.....
ROUND 2:
Chris Howes B/SA defeated - BYE
Blair MacDonald GT/GA defeated Scott Underhill E/SA
Tommy Coughlan C/CM defeated Malcolm London L/SA
Trevor Ervin C/SA defeated Dave Garland SS/IA
Greg Nickerson B/FIA defeated Jeremy Keans G/SA
This was a pivotal round for Greg. Not only was Jeremy Keans looking to pocket the $100 Bounty Hunter money, but he was also #2 in points and needed to defeat Greg to keep within striking distance of him in the race for the Season Championship. When the smoke cleared the win light went to Greg, another Bounty Hunter attempt had been overcome, and the race for the season championship became a race for second place.
ROUND 3:
Blair MacDonald GT/GA defeated Chris Howes B/SA
Greg Nickerson B/FIA defeated Trevor Ervin C/SA
Tommy Coughlan C/CM defeated - BYE
A difficult cleanup due to a rearend failure in a S/Pro entry delayed the 3rd round by an hour or so, but the track personnel and several volunteers worked very hard and got the track back up and running as quickly as possible.
Greg was able to turn away another Bounty Hunter when he put Trevor Ervin on the trailer, and in the process earned the Bye into the Final. Meanwhile, first time ACSSA racer Tommy Coughlan had a Bye in this round, setting up a match with Blair MacDonald in Round 4. If I recall correctly, Tommy had won last year in a non-ACSSA Stock/SS race in Miramichi on the car's debut. He's quickly proving that he's someone to be reckoned with in our series as well.
ROUND 4:
Blair MacDonald GT/GA defeated Tommy Coughlan C/CM
Greg Nickerson B/FIA defeated - BYE
Blair won the round over Tommy, but not without some initial confusion. The timing system awarded Tommy the win and the white slip, but when he checked it back in the pits he saw that he broke out and Blair should have gotten the win. He quickly found Blair to let him know that he needed to be getting ready for a final round race instead of loading his car, and then went to the tower to rectify the problem. Thanks Tommy!
Meanwhile, Greg quietly took the Bye run and got ready for the final; the third of our 2011 series and the third one he was in.
FINAL ROUND:
Greg Nickerson B/FIA defeated Blair MacDonald GT/GA
What can I say? Greg turned on the win light and remains the ONLY winner that the ACSSA has had so far in 2011.....THREE race wins in a row (14 rounds). WOW....congratulations Greg!
