ACSSA 2012 STOCK/SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE RACE # 5;
Presented By A-1 Towing, Lower Sackville, NS
Race 5 of the 2012 ACSSA series was originally slated for September 22nd but had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather, making it the first ACSSA race in our three year history to not be competed on the original weekend. Despite the lateness in the year, we knew that our racers still wanted another chance to race, so after careful consideration a rain-date was announced for October 13th. While that date conflicted with the popular Dutch Classic in Pennsylvania, it was the only viable option available, and even though we knew that our attendance would be below normal due to several racers being away at that event we decided to proceed.
Race Day dawned cool and clear with a brisk headwind, but despite the chilly conditions the racing was hot and heavy. I’m told that approximately 125 racers attended the weekend’s activities, with 11 of our members showing for the ACSSA race. While Wayne Deveau and Keith Johnston were last minute cancellations, we had Bill Campbell show up to defend his 3rd place position in the points. Two other developments of note were the debuts by Chris Chapman of his new 1969 Chevelle Stocker, and the first appearance of Scott Sprague in our series with his freshly re-engined 1972 Duster now running in F/SA trim. Welcome to the ACSSA Scott!
The racing got underway a little late due to persistent dampness in the shutdown area that the weak October sun could not eliminate without some help, but the Greenfield volunteers soon got that problem taken care of.
FINAL QUALIFYING ORDER:
01. - Jody Noble, Middle Sackville, NS - K/S 1965 Chevelle SS 11.464 / 12.85 Index (-1.386)
02. - Jack Keirstead, Onslow Mtn, NS - J/SA 1978 Nova 11.504 / 12.75 Index (-1.246)
03. – Bruce Riley, Lake Echo, NS – SS/EA 1971 Chevelle SS 9.459 / 10.65 Index (-1.191)
04. - Greg Nickerson, Lr. Sackville, NS - C/FIA 1996 Firebird 10.735 / 11.90 Index (-1.165)
05. - Jeremy Keans, Brooklyn, NS - G/SA 1985 Camaro 11.208 / 12.30 Index (-1.092)
06. – Scott Underhill, Bedford, NS – E/SA 1971 Pontiac T-37 11.146 / 12.00 Index (-0.854)
07. – Terry Knapper, Moncton, NB - I/S 1978 Camaro 11.696 / 12.50 Index (-0.803)
08. – Scott Sprague, Hammonds Plains, NS – F/SA 1972 Duster 11.395 / 12.15 Index (-0.755)
09. - Chris Chapman, Debert, NS - H/SA 1969 Chevelle 11.871 / 12.45 Index (-0.579)
10. – Bill Campbell, Moncton, NB – E/SA 1969 Fairlane conv. 11.978 / 12.00 Index (-0.022)
11. – Lloyd Keirstead, Debert, NS – G/CM 1992 Camaro 11.903 / 11.80 Index (+0.103)
With the exception of Bruce Riley; who spun on his first Qualifying attempt, it appeared that the traction was there despite the cool temperatures. Unfortunately Lloyd Keirstead had an engine problem during qualifying that forced him to withdraw, leaving 10 cars to race for all the marbles. Jody Noble started his day off right by earning the #1 Qualifier money and getting the first round Bye. The battle for second and third in the season points was far from over! Four racers were in attendance that could finish as high as 2nd, including Jeremy Keans, Bill Campbell, Jody Noble, and Jack Keirstead, while Scott Underhill could still get into the Top 3 with some racing luck.
ROUND 1:
Terry Knapper .018 RT, 11.708 (11.68) defeated Jack Keirstead -.034 RT, 11.514 (11.50)
Bill Campbell .046 RT, 12.005 (12.00) defeated Jeremy Keans .036 RT, 11.258 (11.23)
Chris Chapman .047 RT, 11.909 (11.88) defeated Greg Nickerson .057 RT, 10.755 (10.76)
Bruce Riley .032 RT, 9.503 (9.47) defeated Scott Sprague .048 RT, 11.411 (11.39)
Scott Underhill .102 RT, 11.165 (11.16) defeated Lloyd Keirstead (broke)
Jodie Noble .668 RT, 17.164 (11.49) defeated BYE
Check out the ETs compared to the Dials; were these guys on or what? If you ignore Jody’s bye run which was an intentionally easy pass, the rest were impressive, and the RTs were nearly all good too!
Bill gained some points on Jeremy and pocketed the Bounty Hunter bonus as well when he took out the young gun with a tighter package that resulted in a Margin of Victory of .013 seconds. Bill also ruined Scott Underhill’s chance at a Top 3 finish with this round win. Bruce’s win against Scott Sprague was even closer, with a MOV of just .003 seconds! In the other pairing, Chris left Greg no room when he was .010 better on the tree and only .009 off his Dial. Greg gave it a good try by tightening it up nicely at the stripe, but he was already mathematically on the trailer.
ROUND 2:
Terry Knapper .008 RT, 11.752 (11.70) defeated Bill Campbell .056 RT, 11.951 (12.00)
Scott Underhill .042 RT, 11.183 (11.17) defeated Jody Noble .022 RT, 11.528 (11.49)
Bruce Riley .053 RT, 9.485 (9.47) defeated Chris Chapman .031 RT, 11.926 (11.88)
In Round 2, the tight racing continued. Terry slapped a .008 light on Bill and took the win light to advance over Bill. This left Bill just short of taking over 2nd Place from Jeremy, and now he'd have to watch from the sidelines to see if Jody could surpass him in the points and grab 3rd place from him. The good packages kept on coming, with Bruce using a .009 MOV against Chris, and Scott Underhill doing even better, with a .005 MOV to end Jody’s day after Jody spun slightly on the launch. Just like that the points battle was over, but there was still a race to be decided.
ROUND 3:
Scott Underhill .077 RT, 11.253 (11.16) defeated Bruce Riley .038 RT, 9.938 (9.47)
Terry Knapper .138 RT, 11.889 (11.70) defeated - BYE
In Round 3, Bruce got a .04 better light only to lose against Scott when his Chevelle had problems and couldn’t run the number. It would be Scott against Terry in the Final Round.
FINAL ROUND:
Scott Underhill .052 RT, 11.213 (11.15) defeated Terry Knapper .104 RT, 11.742 (11.70)
With Scott’s win light, a very successful 3rd season of ACSSA class racing has come to a close. Thanks again to all the racers, track personnel, sponsors, spectators, and others who support the ACSSA; we couldn’t do this without you!
Congratulations to all our race winners as well as our Top 3 Finishers. Special Congratulations to our 2013 Series Champion Greg Nickerson! Our award presentations are being hosted by the NSDRA at their season ending banquet on October 27th at the Best Western in Liverpool, NS, hope to see you there!
