ACSSA 2012 STOCK/SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE RACE #2;
Presented By Parts for Trucks, Dartmouth, NS
RACE REPORT
This Race report starts with a Trivia question: When was the last time you saw TWENTY-ONE Stockers and Super Stockers tearing down the track in Oyster Bed? I’ll give you a hint: if you’ve been involved in drag racing for any less than 25 years your answer would be “never”! In fact, it’s closer to thirty years since we’ve enjoyed such a large turnout of class cars on the Island, and this race sets a new record for field size in the 3 year history of the ACSSA. The way this season has roared out of the gate it’ll be a surprise if the record isn’t reset at least once more during the remaining races of 2012!
The large field was due in part to the addition of two new racers to the series; Ivan Noonan and Joe Dupuis. Ivan was running his 1969 Camaro in Pure Stock, while Joe was getting familiar with his newly purchased 2012 Mustang Cobra Jet in B/FI. Lloyd Keirstead also made his first class racing appearance behind the wheel of his Camaro, and series regulars Blair MacDonald, Malcolm London, Dave Garland, and Tommy Coughlan made their first ACSSA race of the season as well.
Along with the record turnout, Race 2 was blessed with higher than desired temperatures but sunny skies, and the racing was hot too. Raceway Park was filled to capacity with racers of all types, and with the Quick 32 class also being competed the track staff was kept hopping all day. Despite the full schedule and a couple of minor delays we got both qualifying rounds in, and the final order once again had a familiar name at the top. (As announced earlier our PEI races are being run on the 1/8th mile.)
Starting at this race we began paying $50 to the racer turning in the best package among the "1st round runner-ups". This is in keeping with our strategy of trying to spread the money around, and it seems to be working. Our total prize money payout for this race was a whopping $1850, of which $600 went to the winner.

21. – Joe Dupuis, Amherst, NS – B/FI 2012 Mustang CJ 8.727 / 7.65 Index (+1.077)
Bill Sheppard’s debut of his new engine combo experienced a setback when a vibration surfaced that could not be diagnosed at the track, forcing him to withdraw from competition. That gave Kelly MacKay a bye in the first round.
After winning Race 1 Greg Nickerson once again was in the "Bounty Hunter" crosshairs; and the first one to pair off against him would be Ivan Noonan.
ROUND 1:
Greg Nickerson .112 RT, 7.216 (6.95) defeated Ivan Noonan -.003 RT, 8.072 (7.62)
Dave Garland .174 RT, 6.800 (6.53) defeated Chris Howes -.080 RT, 6.644 (6.64)
Jack Keirstead .053 RT, 7.396 (7.39) defeated Don LaVoie .166 RT, 7.642 (7.38)
Malcolm London .005 RT, 7.673 (7.64) defeated Alan Harper .101 RT, 7.682 (7.45)
Terry Knapper .113 RT, 7.482 (7.44) defeated Joe Dupuis .149 RT, 7.298 (7.65)
Bill Campbell .154 RT, 7.833 (7.66) defeated Mark Howes .123 RT, 11.155 (6.59)
Lloyd Keirstead .069 RT, 7.612 (7.56) defeated Blair MacDonald -.066 RT, 6.886 (6.50)
Jeremy Keans .077 RT, 7.115 (7.30) defeated Scott Underhill .105 RT, 7.488 (7.70)
Jody Noble .011 RT, 7.440 (7.42) defeated Tommy Coughlan .098 RT, 6.750 (6.74)
Kelly MacKay .035 RT, 7.162 (7.15) defeated Bill Sheppard (BROKE)
John Armstrong .021 RT, 5.771 (5.71) defeated (BYE)
Greg Nickerson was able to deny the first Bounty Hunter the prize when Ivan Noonan narrowly red lit against him, and then gained some ground in the points when 2nd place Chris Howes lost to Dave Garland. The mid-day sun made the starting line a challenge for some, with Mark Howes spinning hard at the hit and losing to Bill Campbell’s Fairlane. Meanwhile, Jeremy Keans survived a double breakout against Scott Underhill, and Joe Dupuis put together his first trouble free run of the weekend in his Cobra Jet but broke out against Terry Knapper.
ROUND 2:
Bill Campbell .060 RT, 7.843 (7.66) defeated Dave Garland .168 RT 6.798 (6.53)
John Armstrong .022 RT, 5.834 (5.77) defeated Lloyd Keirstead .025 RT, 7.640 (7.56)
Jack Keirstead .108 RT, 7.484 (7.38) defeated Terry Knapper .014 RT, 7.477 (7.48)
Kelly MacKay .023 RT, 7.155 (7.15) defeated Malcolm London .036 RT, 7.654 (7.64)
Greg Nickerson .039 RT, 6.921 (6.95) defeated Jeremy Keans .067 RT, 7.267 (7.31)
Jody Noble .000 RT, 7.370 (7.43) defeated BYE
In Round 2, Greg again robbed a Bounty Hunter of the $50 bonus when he narrowly defeated Jeremy in a double breakout pairing. Jack Keirstead survived a lucky matchup after he got crossed up at the launch and couldn’t run his dial only to have Terry give it back when he got on the brakes just a touch too late, breaking out by just over 3 thousandths of a second. The other three pairs featured more good racing, and Jody capped off the round with a perfect light on his bye run.
ROUND 3:
Jack Keirstead .057 RT, 7.428 (7.38) defeated Bill Campbell .129 RT 7.705 (7.66)
Kelly MacKay .068 RT, 7.165 (7.14) defeated Jody Noble .156 RT, 7.371 (7.40)
Greg Nickerson .076 RT, 6.916 (6.91) defeated John Armstrong .067 RT, 5.811 (5.83)
In Round 3, the first two pairings were won on reaction times, while Greg and John had a great race that ended with John taking a touch too much stripe and breaking out.
ROUND 4:
Kelly MacKay .016 RT, 7.152 (7.15) defeated Greg Nickerson .066 RT, 6.916 (6.91)
Jack Keirstead .034 RT, 7.387 (7.38) defeated - BYE
Did these guys come to race or what? Kelly strapped the best package of the day on Greg to grab both that money and the Bounty Hunter bonus all at the same time, Jack didn’t back off for his bye either, and put up another nice package. Two first time finalists would meet for the final round!
FINAL ROUND:
Jack Keirstead .025 RT, 7.383 (7.38) defeated Kelly MacKay 0.013 RT, 7.122 (7.14)
Race 1 had a great final round, and Race 2 was just as exciting. Both racers got out of the gate well, with a slight edge (.012) to Kelly. Kelly caught and passed Jack but in doing so grabbed a touch too much stripe and broke out, and just like that Jack was
our Race 2 Champion.
Thanks again to everyone who contributes to the success of our series; including racers, track personnel, sponsors, and spectators. We couldn’t do it without you! Race 3 will be in Miramichi on August 4th, hope to see you there!
