I want to make sure that this message is understood so I'll start by explaining what I personally believe is becoming a problem here on the east coast.
This website that we frequent for several years is and has been, just at the home page implies,
So in these extremely tough times, . . . times where so many things have such a huge effect of the economics of drag racing, why have we become so complacent with our approach to promoting our sport. I'll start with the Moncton Speed and Sport show in April. So who (drag racers) was in the show this year, did anything exciting happen, who won the big awards at the show? Seriously, this is a free avenue for promotion of the sport. We all fight for spots on radio, television, and newsprint . . . and success is not always easy to achieve.
The silence, I thought it was strange but with-held comment because I sometimes blame myself for sitting and hoping for some information to flow my way.
This past weekend, was the launch weekend at two tracks in Atlantic Canada. With beautiful weather in the forecast there wasn't much hype built about either event. Apparently the events both took place and I did read Terry's report from Miramichi Raceway as well as Earl's report from Raceway Park. Both gentleman did an excellent job with their results post and for that I thank them for their efforts.
As a racer, a fan, and a photojournalist I'm concerned about the direction this ship is charting. Each of the tracks should develop some type of media liaison to not only post results but to also include some highlights of each event, . . . both before and after it takes place. The media outlets do visit this site and they do read things that are posted, so just build it up and coverage will grow automatically. Not to mention the potential for higher gate revenues and also the potential for new blood joining our ranks.
Here are some examples that dozens of people are wondering:
* ... How did John MacKinnon and his new dragster do?
* ... Was Jody Gallant's Vega down the track?
* ... How did the new Niesten Nova perform?
* ... Any other new rides or paint out on display?
Again, I want this message to be seen as a positive. It is not directed at any person, any track, or any current procedure. It is my observation and it's something I might be too passionate about, but I truly believe it's a real concern.
In closing, I can volunteer to assist any track in Atlantic Canada to put the tools in place and get promotional pieces required to generate some life and hopefully insure the survival of this great sport.
