From the 2011 IHRA Rulebook Page 31: Super Stock/GT Front- Wheel Drive Conversions
STEERING: May be relocated. New cross member may be installed. Stock type steering and arms required. SUSPENSION: Aftermarket front suspension or stock type allowed.
Does this mean a Jegster chassis' Vega based front suspension in a 1997 Cavalier is legal for this class? Just curious........

has to stay with the same design, and i beleive you need to use the factory control arms. Cavaleir being a strut type front, youwould need to keep it withthe struts. FJ smith has some good pics of their strange setups on their site. As well as their modifyed k members.
You could use the stock front struts, swap the spindles side to side for front steer conversion, and use the outer end of the cv axle to keep the hub assembly in together. Just have a machinist 'neaten up' the axle stub and you would never know they weren't built like that.

Since the price of all the F.J. Smith gear needed to convert a Cavalier to SS/GT is about $2500 I was wondering if there was a cheaper way.

Don, Good question. Not one I can easily answer as I haven't been involved in any FWD conversions. Your best bet is to lay your scenario out at www.classracer.com There are many there who are very knowledgable and take great pride in being thrifty. Can't hurt!

I've seen rwd conversions done the way i listed above, not on SS cars, but on bracket cars and it works. Is it perfect? no. Is it budget conscious? yes.
