I would think .125 X 1" straps would be required over the top of the cell. The pic below shows a flat cell - it's not a vertical one like yours but the rule still applies.

The cell has the grooves in the back just like the cell in your pic does on the top. Can somebody clarify if I need to add more straps to this to pass tech. I looked in the rule book, like you said - nothing in there about vertical fuel cells. I can't see it going anywhere as it's clamped very tight. I still need to add the vent line and a ground strap.

I have been following a Cavalier roadster build by a guy named Greg Stanley over the winter and got a lot of great ideas from it. But here is his fuel cell mounting, the cell he is using and the one I have have very definitive grooves for straps and clamps to go. The cell you are using Stuart is lacking the grooves you see in the pics. I will post pics of mine in a few days. Link to the whole series of pics is bumracing.com/v-web/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Stanman-Cavalier&page=1

Mine has the grooves on the backside for the straps. You can't see them because the 1/8" x 1" flat stock is filling them. The fuel cell is very well clamped into the 2 vertical and horizontal tubes. I'll add the top straps if I have to but that means another trip back to the metal shop.

So the grooves don't go all the way around the cell? Don't think I ever saw one of those before........

Nope, just on the back. It's a 4 gallon RCI cell, I bought it from Road Rage a while back. I kinda thought it was odd too but I didn't think it would be such a pain in the arse to install or I would have sent it back.

If you think about it the current arangement certainly meets the spirit of the rule. 2 straps holding the tank and they are aligned in the direction of maximum force. Forward and backward for accelerating and braking. Beyond the car getting airborne and slamming down the fuel cell cannot get anywhere. I would be happier to see a full strap groove like my Jazz cells does but it should work.

Maybe I should add the other straps just to make sure it will pass tech? I don't want to drive to Greenfield for nothing.

I think we should trust the RCI engineers on this one ;D IMO you did the best job you could on the mounting of that cell. As far as straps over the top it doesn't even look like there's room for them anyway....

I tried to do a good job, but I'm no master fabricator like Mario. ;D....Mine is crude but effective - just like me. ...I still need to put in a grounding lug/strap and then my lines. I'll go with it as is and hope for the tech guys to pipe up on this one.
