Thanks for the info Kelly!! Just to see if I could make this race, I worked out the numbers on my G5 (Wish I could run the truck CM, but it's older than 1980!!) Shipping weight is 2747 - Factory rated HP @ 148 NHRA rated 140 2747/140= 19.62 IHRA classes it at EF - 19.00-19.99 140X19.00 = 2660 +170 = 2830 minimum weight required (can it be over? Cause I ain't 170lbs!!) So I could put the car in at EF/S - but I know the car will run WAY under a 19.00 index. Did I calculate wrong somehow? Rob B. the would have to run 15.60 in 1/4 in ef/s

Here's that post again Darrell: One of the followers of these threads saw the need for some info, and emailed Micheal Beard, who often writes for the IHRA magazine. Micheal generously took time to offer the following references which should be helpful to anyone trying to understand these classes. Micheal said "I've written some stuff over the years.... S/SS Feature on Class Racing: www.competitionplus.com/2006_05/class_racing.htmlGuide to Bracket Racing: www.staginglight.com/guide/Also, near the bottom of this page www.staginglight.com/motorsports/cars_drivers.html there is a list of links to a 5-part series we did on our Super Stock S-10 buildup."

You know, I've just spent 2 hours trying to summarize the many IHRA Stock & Super Stock classes into a few simple paragraphs so that readers could quickly figure out if their car might fit into one of those classes. Eventually I came to realize that doing it that way isn't practical, as my shortened summary was still very long and there was a chance that I'd omit some detail that would be important. Don's explanation of the basic differences between Stock, Super Stock, and Bracket cars hits the mark pretty much dead on. The main things bracket cars often have that aren't allowed in these classes are lexan windows, gutted interiors, and sheet metal floors. There are many other specific requirements, but in order to fully understand what these are I strongly suggest that you sit down in front of your computer with your favorite beverage and read through pages 33 to 66 of the IHRA rulebook. If you are still unclear of the requirement of any particular class, post your question here and I'm sure someone will be able to help you. Here's the rulebook link that was previously posted elsewhere: www.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?m=1203&l=1&p=1

Hi Guys,
In an attempt to take some of the load off of Jeff for this event I will volunteer to help anyone interested in finding out more about class racing and whether their car will fit a class.
I might not have all the answers but I know where to find them and who does. Trying to work your way through the NHRA/IHRA rule books can be quite difficult the first few times. I'd like to do my part and try and help grow the class locally.
So if you are reading this and have questions please feel free to email me at mhowes@globalconvention.ca

Just ran my 2002 Cavalier through the NHRA specs and found it fits the D/FS class. The current index is 15.60 and the National Record is 14.72 and my bone stock Cavalier has run a best of 17.44. Wonder what it would take to knock over two seconds off the ET just to make the index?

The only run my G5 has seen - was a 16.78 - but spun 3 gears leaving. It will take a set of slicks and axles minimially to get you under the index - Not sure what the word is on aftermarket axles being legal. I'm sure I could make the index at FF/S - but the worth of changing my daily driver into something else is questionable. Why is it that Trucks must be newer than 1980?

Rob, aftermarket axles are legal in RWD cars so I would expect they are legal in FWD too. A search of the rule book will tell you for sure. With slicks the weak links in most FWD cars are the transaxle, CV joints, and axles. I'm guessing that's why a lot of the FWD stockers are automatics; to ease the strain on those parts.
I suspect they limited the trucks to 1980 & newer because they need to have specs submitted by the manufacturer for each of the combos so they know what's legal, and I doubt that the manufacturers showed much interest in providing info for trucks over 30 years old. The car info has been kept current all along, so they didn't have to acquire the old specs, as they already had them all on file. Otherwise I'm sure that the cars would have a year limitation too.
Note that the above is just my opinion!
