Jeff i think the white Camaro is George Estabrooks F/S car, Wendell old Demon is now the Iron Demon and your question about the number 1969 on the Fairlane, well that is Jeff Merkle permanent NHRA number.

I think the white camaro belonged to ALLAN ARMSTRONG, and if it is, it is sitting in his shop once again being updated for SS/IA, owned by Dave Garland. When I was there last week myself and John had a conversation as to when I started going to the track he was driving that car. He asked how long ago I thought that might be, and the answer was 30+ years. He replied "It don't look any different now than it did then ", and he is correct.

Wasn't the Merkle car originally out of New Jersey? I remember that being a father/son team, Mustang C-Jet and the Fairlane racing in Sanair.

Yes you are right the Merkle team was from NJ and a father and sons deal with Ed having four sons and one daughter but the main racing son was Jeff. From the photo of the white Camaro it looks like it has a flat hood but I can't see the full number or class but you could be right because I think Allyn number was 1422 and I believe the last two numbers are 22.

That's a nice picture of the Action Camaro; hadn't seen that one before. Looking at all these old pictures is a fun trip down Memory Lane! Thanks for posting them.

;D -- That is Allyns old C/SM 1967 Camaro that is now Dave Garlands Super Stock machine. I believe it was powered by a 331 cubic inch mouse at the time but he dropped in cubes a little later on and tossed some weight. The car had a real low snorkle hood scoop. Sure was a nice little screamer.

Correction to the information about the Merkle family racing Big Ed as he was called by all his friends and he had many his competition number was 1969 E-F/SA .He ran a 1969 Montego. He won the Summer Nationals in 1977. He built many Ford race cars.He built the 68 !/2 CJ Mustang that James Conte bought. Jeff Merkle was runner up to Ray Cook at the 1979 Summer Nationals his competition number was 1979. He ran a 1969 Mustang F/B. Jim Conte also bought that car. Jeff restored the Montego and the last time I saw him was at Epping at the last NHRA Divisional meet. The Merkle Fairlane was sold to Gerry O'Leary. I bought the car in March of 1979.It was a G/Sa at the time. NHRA factored the 428 many times to the present factor of 335/375HP 3920 lbs. Driver included. We raced it in Sanair for the first of many times in 1980. Most racers said we would not be able to race there be cause it was a national event.. We had a hard time getting through tech but WE RACED our first National Event in Sanair in 1980. Bill E/SA 1428
