STOCK/SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE RACE #1; Presented By Cottman Transmissions of Dartmouth
Race 1 of the 2010 Stock/Super Stock Challenge Series is in the books, and what a race it was! From the moment I rolled through the gate on Friday afternoon and saw lots of Stockers and Super Stockers already in the pits I knew that this race was going to be something special. The next 24 hours proved that to be true.
We got right to work, and by mid-evening fourteen Stockers and Super Stockers had gone through the track tech for safety items followed by class tech for rule compliance, and were weighed to ensure that each car exceeded the minimum weight for their respective class. After that, some made a pass or two to sort out their cars and get ready for the next day, while others checked out the competition, worked on their entries, or did some bench racing.
Early Saturday morning four more arrivals went through the same process, finalizing the field at eighteen. The first qualifying session was set for 9:30, and everyone watched with interest as Gary Keans and his crew performed their usual thorough track prep. With 30+ C air temps and sunshine beating down on the track maintaining good traction was a real challenge, but the starting line stayed good all day except for briefly in the second round during the hottest part of the day when a couple of cars spun.
To say that the first qualifying session was an eye opener would definitely be an understatement. The track produced some world class hook, and when the smoke had cleared we had witnessed a bunch of fast runs; led by Fred Thibeault's -1.31 blast in his '69 Camaro. Bumper dragging launches became routine as car after car hooked hard and stormed down the quarter mile. The second qualifying session was held around 11:30, and by then both the track temp and the air temp had risen significantly. As a result most of the elapsed times from the first session were not surpassed. There were a couple of noteable exceptions however: John Armstrong improved by .06 to an 8.82 in his '69 Corvette, and Wayne Deveau laid down a good pass after a shifter cable failure ruined his 1st run. With the end of the 2nd session the field was set as follows:

As a final treat, Alan Harper brought in some NAPA stuff for our participants, including a garage creeper, some hats and T-shirts, and a goody bag for everyone. Thanks Al and thanks NAPA!
Thanks also to all the racers, track volunteers, fans, and sponsors that joined together to make Race 1 such a big success. It appeared that everyone enjoyed themselves, and we're already looking forward to Race 2 of the 2010 Stock/Super Stock Challenge Series, which is being presented by Kevin Lively Jr. Transportation Services, and hosted by Raceway Park in PEI on July 3rd. Hope to see you there!
